How to use

How to use DocClean for client-side PDF redaction

DocClean lets you redact sensitive information from PDFs entirely in your browser. Follow the steps below to upload a file, run OCR, apply GDPR-safe or CCPA-lite profiles and export safe copies for visa bundles, tenancy applications, HR workflows and more.

How it works

100% client-side redaction

PDFs are processed in your browser tab. No uploads, no server-side storage and no background sync.

OCR + PII detection

Tesseract-based OCR extracts text from each page. Pattern-match detectors then find names, IDs, emails, phone numbers and more.

GDPR-safe & CCPA-lite profiles

Choose a compliance profile that matches your risk level: strict GDPR-safe, US-focused CCPA-lite, or minimal social sharing.

Step 1 – Open the redaction tool and upload a PDF

Go to /redact-pdf and use the file selector to choose a PDF from your device. This could be a bank statement, a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), tenancy agreement, contract, ID scan or payslip.

The PDF is rendered into images inside the browser. The original file is not uploaded to DocClean.

Step 2 – Choose your compliance profile

In the "Compliance profile" dropdown, choose GDPR-safe for maximum EU/UK privacy, CCPA/CPRA-lite for US-style consumer data, or Social sharing for lightweight masking when posting screenshots online.

You can switch profiles at any time. The redaction overlay will update automatically using the existing OCR text.

Step 3 – Run OCR on all pages or the current page

Click "Run OCR on all pages" for a full-document scan, or "Run OCR on current page" if you only need part of a larger PDF. DocClean uses Tesseract.js to extract text and applies PII detection according to the active profile.

Step 4 – Review hidden vs flagged hits

Each page shows a small summary: how many hits are hidden (must-hide) and how many are flagged for manual review. Use this to confirm that the right items — names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, national IDs, account numbers — are being masked.

Step 5 – Export a redacted copy

Once you're satisfied, use the export buttons to download a redacted PDF, a DOCX with page images, or a ZIP of PNG images. Share these redacted copies instead of the original PDF.

Step 6 – Combine with other tools

You can pair DocClean with other workflows — for example, compressing files into a ZIP before uploading them, or converting a Word document to PDF, then redacting and exporting a safe copy.
